Vancouver TAC 2014: Tunnelling in a Resource Driven World!

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we are pleased to welcome all participants to the 23rd National Conference of the Tunnelling Association of Canada – Vancouver TAC 2014. This conference is held every two years in various locations throughout Canada, and this year we are excited to be in Vancouver.

The conference theme "Tunnelling in a Resource Driven World" reflects the growing importance of tunnelling in the development of resource projects. These projects are required to fulfill the needs of an expanding population with ever greater resource demands. Whether they are long tunnels driven at greater depths for large underground mines, high pressure tunnels for hydroelectric projects, or tunnels to convey crude oil or gas pipelines, the tunnelling industry is being called on to enable ever more challenging resource projects. A special session will focus on the conference theme, bringing together three speakers with specialist knowledge on current applications and future trends of tunnelling in the mining industry.

This conference also features a "Nordic" element and includes a half-day session on tunnelling in Nordic environments, where practitioners from around the world will present challenges of working in northern climates and remote locations or within northern ground conditions. This session will be held in conjunction with the ITA-sanctioned Nordic Forum that will be meeting as part of the conference.

The conference will be opened by the BC Minister of Energy and Mines, the Hon. Bill Bennett, who will provide a unique perspective on current and future trends in the resource industry in British Columbia. The conference will also feature four highly regarded keynote speakers who will present varying perspectives on the conference themes.

From the technical sessions to the planned social events to the technical tours of the Evergreen and Port Mann project sites, we hope everyone will have the chance to meet with friends and colleagues in the tunnelling industry. Vancouver TAC 2014 also features a trade exhibition of tunnelling construction equipment, products and services, and firms involved in our business. The organizing committee extends a heartfelt thank you to the many exhibitors and sponsoring companies, without whom this event would not be possible.

Finally, we would like to also recognize the efforts of all members of the volunteer organizing committee and the TAC Officers and Directors who have worked diligently for many months to make this conference a success.

Have a great National Conference and enjoy Vancouver!
