Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
The Tunnelling Association of Canada is committed to building and supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive tunnelling industry.
What are equity, diversity, and inclusion?
Equity - the fair and respectful treatment of all people.
Diversity - the demographic mix of the community, with a focus on the representation of equity-deserving groups (considering aspects such as gender, age, indigeneity, sexual orientation, race, immigrant status, disability, etc.)
Inclusion - an environment where everyone feels welcome, is treated with respect, and is able to fully participate. An inclusive culture is about creating a deep sense of belonging, where every member is valued and their ideas heard.
Why are equity, diversity, and inclusion important?
Higher rates of diversity in industries and workplaces have been proven in numerous studies to help industries evolve, innovate, problem-solve, and become more efficient. Industries and workplaces that are highly diverse
and inclusive have a better sense of community, increased creativity, increased engagement, and a more positive culture.
Our Commitment
The Tunnelling Association of Canada is committed to supporting our industry towards achieving a more diverse and inclusive workforce. In 2022, we struck an EDI Task Force with the mission of identifying and addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion to improve the experience of working in the tunnel industry in Canada. We are investing in the participation and promotion of underrepresented groups, while supporting the tunnelling industry to achieve their diversity and inclusion goals.
Key initiatives include:
- Fostering and promoting an awareness and commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Integrating diversity and inclusion principles into TAC technical sessions, workshops, conferences, and events
- Identifying and removing activities that hinder the diversity and inclusion principles of TAC
- Establishing and assessing measurable objectives for achieving improved diversity
- Reporting on various diversity statistics across the Canadian tunnelling industry
- Providing features in TAC publications that showcase diversity and inclusion success stories
